Success: Mind Power In Action

Let me start this post by making an illustration: Two people walking, they meet a stray dog. One of these two people has followed a course in thinking which has made her a lover of animals and is instantly filled with compassion for the poor creature, so she approaches it. The other person has habitually followed a line of thinking which is in the opposite direction, one of fear. Her thoughts about dogs recur in her mind and she is instantly filled with alarm. The actions of these two people are as different as their thinking, for one approaches the animal with love and the other flees in terror. She doesn't understand that her sense of danger is the result of her own thinking not because of the dog. If the dog had been the real cause, then the other person would have been fearful as she was and fled also. This is the same way we attribute the causes of our own faults, misfortune, failure, you can name it, to others when in fact it is the result of our thinking and interpretations of different circumstances. With this in mind, I hope you do realize the power our thinking has on our actions and external world along with our perception of it. Quoting Shakespeare, "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings."

Thinking may be divided into two kinds, harmonious and discordant or positive and negative and from one of the oldest writings in literature, "each brings forth its own kind". Cause always precedes its consequence, and it will always be found in its consequence, therefore the character of the cause will always be found in the character of its consequence. Thinking is the initial stage in all human actions, circumstances and situations, and it is causative and creative in its nature and character. Thus, right or positive or harmonious conditions along with the antithesis of these, are a resultant of the corresponding thinking process that preceded them. Physical training produces muscular strength, mental training produces mental ability of the same kind as the training, you can go on if you like, but the principle is always the same, cause and effect. In our lives and all that surrounds us, thoughts are the primary and principle cause of all. Who hasn't noticed that following an evening that has been thoroughly enjoyed, no matter how one worked that day, that there is less mental and physical exhaustion. Why, you may wonder, because your thoughts were harmonious. Consider it for a sec, a man is easily broken down if his mind is filled with uncertainty, anxiety, worry, fear, etc, but he can withstand hours of labor or exhausting work if his mind is filled with assurance, calmness, confidence and courage.

To start training your mind, it is important to note that two thoughts of opposite character cannot possibly occupy the mind at the same time, though they may follow one another very rapidly. Each type of thinking, harmonious or discordant, produces results exactly of its own kind and if you exclude one, the other will present itself. Thinking is causative as I have already mentioned, and if one were to exclude all discordant and wrong thinking, the subsequent consequences would not result. Putting it simply, CEASE DISCORDANT THINKING, and replace it with the type of thinking that will manifest what you desire. The first step towards this end is to first state what the discordant type of thoughts are. The obvious ones are those that result in the feelings of, anger, hate, greed, envy, lust, jealousy and all malevolent emotions you recognize as discordant. But most of these are wonderfully subtle in that they hide their true character so that many who entertain them won't recognize their true nature. These manifest themselves in emotions like, grief, regret, disappointment, fear, doubt, and with their sense of responsibility, anxiety, worry and despair. Some of them might even appear laudable, like self condemnation with its self consciousness, self abasement, shame and remorse. Lets take for example, anxiety and its accompanying sense of responsibility. In its severest form, it puts an effectual stop to all progress and under a keen sense of responsibility, who hasn't hesitated to undertake a good deed, I might ask, and even then having undertaken it, hasn't been awfully hindered by the anxiety which attended its execution. These emotions, and the ones accompanying them, spring from fear and doubt and find their legitimate result in worry and all its disasters, culminating in moral cowardice and despair. Again from Shakespeare, " non can cure their harms by wailing them," instead of indulging these thoughts and their resultant emotions or feelings if you like, rather focus on the next positive result you want especially when considering regret and disappointment, and considering fear and doubt, why waste your energy pondering on a future event that might not happen, why not instead put that energy on focusing on the positive result you want. You are giving that negative outcome you don't want energy by pondering on it.

Banish all even the suspicion of the destructive thoughts of hopelessness, defeat or despair. Especially these if you desire to be successful and wealthy. Whatever the object, let its consideration be without a thought of discouragement or doubt, exercise faith and confidence in your ability to achieve it, even when examining its difficulties most carefully. Scrutinize all obstacles with the sole intention of how to overcome them. Do not let yourself be overwhelmed. If the project is worth the effort, there is always a way to accomplish it. Now the question is, how do we overcome discordant thinking? We do this by using the rule of substitution we previously mentioned somewhere in this article. Each time discordant thinking sets in, drop it out of the mind by giving attention wholly to harmonious thoughts. A word of caution, if apprehension of either effort or difficulty arises in the mind as a result of trying to let go of the discordant and substitute with the harmonious, it should be instantly excluded because it will lead to the very type of thinking we are trying to avoid. How do you know you are thinking discordant thoughts during an active day? Just take a few seconds here and there during the day and notice what you are feeling, once you do, try figuring out the thoughts causing the feeling, if you don't have the time, just jump right in to thinking harmonious thoughts because you can change your emotions by thinking. A mindset, set for acquiring and maintaining wealth, can be cultivated by the right thinking and discarding all inhibitive thought processes. Substitution is one way, plenty others do exist, we will be discussing them in the next articles and posts. To conclude, let me leave you a quote from President McCosh:

"Though a man may not be able to command his sensibilities directly, he has complete

power over them indirectly. He can guide and control, if not the feeling itself, at least the idea, which is the

channel in which it flows.... He may be able to banish the unholy idea by calling in a more elevating one; he may

remove the object out of the way or remove out of the way of the object, and the flame left without its feeder will

die out. A man can thus control his feelings; he is responsible for them, for their perversion, for their excess, and

defect."
